The 2015 San Antonio Marathon & Half Marathon is always a great event. It was my first Half Marathon that I participated in back in 2009. I sat out this years event despite being registered again but got to see the start of the All-Star pros.

12401860_10153483807364331_1150582212708269460_o
The Women’s Half Marathon event had running stars and former Olympians like Kara Goucher participating.

Former and future Olympians Shalane Flanagan and Amy Cragg were also participating, using this event a warm-up trial for the U.S. Olympics Trials.

Former Olympian and fan favorite American runner Meb greeted the runners a good morning and fun run from the booth.

12418830_10153483814644331_131796331362550252_o
Aaron Braun won the Men’s Half Marathon event.

12402013_10153483814979331_2248793380964811600_oKara Goucher won the Women’s Half Marathon event.

12471365_10153483809454331_8995949782058407468_oEven the Pro Runners do it for the bling. It was a unique event for me, because I got to see what its like to watch a Rock n Roll event instead of participating it.

Vacation Run Secrets

The best, more efficient workout when you’re at the beach…

Running into the dawn: In Summer, it’s best to run before the sun rises above the horizon.  Since it’s common for family members to sleep a bit longer on vacation, get up early and hit the beach.    Set a total time you wish to run, and turn around at the halfway point.  Or, run 1-2 minutes longer going out and try to run faster on the return.

When you’re camping and near a lake and/or mountains.  Drive around the campground area to find suitable running/trail areas.  Plan a group hike each day.  Appoint yourself the “lookout”.  Walk ahead of the group for a few minutes and then run ahead for a minute or two, and run back.  Repeat this routine throughout the hike.  Even short segments of running, during a 1-2 hour hike, will maintain your running adaptations very well.

On a road trip, taking frequent “pit stops”.  Wear your running gear on the trip.  If it is safe to run or walk at your rest area, walk for 1-2 minutes as a warmup and then run for 5-10 minutes.  Repeat this pattern until the group is ready to load up.  If it is a food stop, get your meal “to go” and spend the time running.

When you’re on a trip that’s based around a theme park.  Many of the hotels in areas like Disneyworld, have designated areas for running.  In some cases you can run to the parks.  Ask the hotel staff for recommended routes.  Each evening, gather the family and plan your park visit for the next day.  This allows for you to find a timeslot to squeeze in a run.  As you mention how you are planning your run, you’ll teach the kids how important your exercise is, for you.

When you’re on a sightseeing city tour.  Time is limited during most sightseeing tours but you can usually squeeze in a few minutes here and there.  Wear running clothes or very comfortable apparel with running shoes.  When the bus stops, keep walking around while looking at the sights or listening to the guide.  If time allows before reboarding, jog for a minute or two.

A home-based vacation.  If possible, arrange with another family member to watch the kids while you run.  Then, offer that person a chance to get away for a while while you stay with kids.  Early morning is often a great time to get in your runs.  Plan trips to local parks (that you seldom visit) where you can run and walk with the family.

FAST AND FUN—It’s a state of mind

Why is running faster a good thing?  Short and fast segments not only help you run faster in races.  If you run a few faster segments each week you can improve your running efficiency while receiving a better attitude boost.

How long should you be running before you add some faster running in?  After 2-3 months of regular running some short accelerations can be added with minimal risk of aches and pains.

Is it possible that running fast can actually be fun?  Yes.  The secret is be creative and limit the length of the fast segment at first.

How often should you run fast? Playful speed can be done once or twice a week.

Four Faster, Fun Workouts
1. Speed play that you can do on your own. ACCELERATE AND GLIDE.  After an easy 10 minute warmup of slow running, pick up the pace for 10 steps, then coast off the momentum for 10-20 steps.  Don’t be obsessed about the number of steps as this is just a guideline.  Don’t sprint–be playful.  Gradually pick up the pace, and then glide back down to a jog.  Repeat 2-3 times on your first attempt, and take a one minute walk break.  Each week you could increase the number of accelerations as you wish, with a recommended walk break of 1-2 minutes between each.

1. Speed play you can do with one friend—CHASE game.  After an easy 5 minute jog together, one person takes the lead.  As the leader changes the pace (speeding up, then slowing down, speeding up) the follower tries to stay close but not pass.  After 3-5 minutes, take a 1-2 minute walk break and repeat with the other runner leading.  Repeat as many times as desired.

2. Speed play you can do with two friends—SURPRISE game. Following the same format as game 1, the follower tries to surprise the leader by passing gently but quickly.  While there should be no sprinting, it is OK to run fast for 10-30 steps to pass.

3. A speed play workout you can do with three or more friends—INDIAN RUNNING.  The group is running single file for a minute or two at an easy pace.  Then, the last runner, passes all of the other runners and takes the lead for a minute or two.  The current leader sets the pace, and takes a walk break.  When the running resumes, the last runner starts to move to the front.  Each runner gets to take the lead at least once in this game.

Run/walk 26.2? Yes! For Quick Recovery, Faster Times
How can runners, even Boston Qualifiers, run faster by taking walk breaks? I know, it’s counter-intuitive but in numerous surveys I’ve found that former non-walk-break runners improve an average of more than 13 minutes when they walk early and often.
How does it work?  Those who have a strategy almost always do better than those who just get out there and see what happens.  A muscle, etc., that is used constantly will fatigue and break down more quickly.  By taking scheduled walk breaks, the muscles stay strong and resilient to  the finish.  The principle behind walk breaks is “Conservation of energy”.
How can you run a faster marathon with walk breaks?  Almost everyone who runs continuously experiences a slowdown during the last 3-6 miles. Runners who use strategic walk breaks from the beginning tend to either speed up at the end or at least avoid slowing down.
Can you actually set a PR with the run/walk method?  I hear from thousands every year who set Personal Records by using the method.
How does the run/walk method protect you against injury?  Each runner has certain “weak links” that ache more and are common injury sites. Continuous use of the muscle will first cause the muscle to fatigue early, reducing muscle performance.  Continuing to run run under increasing fatigue will cause muscle, tendon and joint damage.  Walk breaks stop the abuse of a weak link, allowing the tissue to adapt, significantly reducing aches, injuries and recovery time.
How does the run/walk method affect your day-to-day recovery? Because there is less damage to repair after a run, the legs, knees, etc., feel better, sooner.  Many report that by using my run-walk-run method they can run the next day after a marathon. Some injured runners have been able to train for and run marathons while the injury gradually healed.  Walk breaks can keep  one below the threshold of further irritation.

2015-11-26 – 25th Annual Turkey Trot 5K in Beaumont, TX

This year was the 25th Annual Turkey Trot 5K to be held in Beaumont, TX on Thanksgiving morning.

2015 Turkey Trot 5K 03

There was a great turn out for this years event.

2015 Turkey Trot 5K 01

For the first time there were Turkey Trot medals given to all of the finishers.

2015 Turkey Trot 5K 06

Along the way there quite a few costumes, this was one of the best.

2015 Turkey Trot 5K 05

After the 5K and the 10K events, there was a Kids 1K. A great deal of people stayed to cheer on the kids.

2015 Turkey Trot 5K 07

This guy led the start of the Kids 1K event.

2015 Turkey Trot 5K 04

I really like this event. It has a great family atmosphere and friendly support from other runners/participants.

2015-09-20 -Houston Texans Running of the Bulls 5K

The Houston Texans Running of the Bulls 5K held in Houston, TX was probably one of, if not the, biggest 5K event I have participated in to date.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 01

This event was held on the grounds and surrounding area of the Texans NRG Stadium.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 02

Here are just some of the participants gathering before the event.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 03

Here is the start of the event. It was pretty cool and we started in waves.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 04

We started in the parking lot area before working our way onto the nearby streets around the stadium.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 05

Toro the Bull, the Houston Texans mascot, lead the way of the event.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 06

Back into the parking lot area and we made our way back towards the old Astrodome.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 07

The once great Astrodome in the background. I would like to see it brought back to life. This building meant a great deal to the Houston area for many decades.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 08

Once around the Astrodome we were all headed back to the new stadium.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 09

We entered though the floor level.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 10

We all were able to run though the Texans entrance way.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 11

The Texans Cheerleaders were also there to welcome us to the finish line.

2015 Texans Running of the Bulls 5K 12

The stadium floor was our finishers area. Pretty cool being on ground level. I can now say I have been on field level at a MLB and NFL stadium.

This was my first event in the new INKnBURN nerd inspired shirt. Also wearing my classic INKnBURN jean inspired tech shorts. Great items. Check them out at INKnBURN.com

The 6th Annual 5K Run/ Walk and 1K Kid Fun Run was held in Beaumont, TX on September 19, 2015 at Terrell Park.

2015 LIVESTRONG 5K Beaumont TX 01

This was the starting area for the days events. It was a nice, laid back, family friendly event.

2015 LIVESTRONG 5K Beaumont TX 02

Here runners, friends and family were able to sign up for the Be A Match program. I was able to fairly quickly. Just a little bit of time out of your day could mean a great deal to others.

2015 LIVESTRONG 5K Beaumont TX 03

There was a nice balloon release for those who have been affected by cancer. There were a few very special speakers on hand as well.

2015 LIVESTRONG 5K Beaumont TX 04

The balloons were nice to see in the morning light.

2015-09-06 – Disneyland Half Marathon (Dumbo Double Dare Challenge – Part 2)

Disneyland-Dumbo-Double-Dare-2015This was the second event of my runDisney Challenge race weekend. My goal was to complete the Disneyland Half Marathon in order to earn a 2015 runDisney Coast-to-Coast medal five years after I was first able to do so. The Dumbo Double Dare Challenge was my way to that. I was excited, and scared, since I have never participated in a back to back event like this before. Expect a great deal of photos. I love the runDisney events.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 001

The early morning start was nice. Everyone was excited to be there.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 002

Lots of runners there which means a little bit of a wait during the wave corral starts but no one seems to mind. Disney does a great job at keeping the participants entertained and hyped up (and informed) while waiting.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 003

Mickey, Minnie and friends see every runner off a the start.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 004

We started off down the road, at the same starting area as the 10K the day before, then went a little further into the Good Neighbor hotel areas. WE all ended up running right in front of the hotel I was staying at which was neat. Then back towards the California Adventure park and right into the backstage area.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 006

Some of the backstage area was a little crowded so please expect and account for that, especially near the first water location.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 005

After a short trek though backstage we enter the CarsLand area which had all their neon lights on an a few places to stop for a photo.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 007

All of the cast members who were there along the course were fantastic!

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 008

Another narrow area which got a little congested was when we all tried to go though the gates of the parks.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 009

Loved seeing the monorail. Still haven’t had the opportunity to ride the Disneyland Monorail but hope to some day… but I can say that I ran under it.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 010

The Disneyland park looks great in its 60th Anniversary overlay. If possible you must visit the park during this time.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 011

The original Main Street USA in Disneyland is always a sight to see.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 012

This was a sellout event as you can see, but the more people the more fun.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 013

The sun was rising while we were in the backstage area again. A little bright but nice to see in an area most do not get to see.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 014

We came out of this back stage area into ToonLand. I like this area which isn’t in Walt Disney World anymore. Here is Mickey’s house…. but as you saw earlier he was up early and greeting us at the start of the event.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 015

Several characters were out and about for photos. Some were long lines. Some were very long lines. I didn’t take as many photos with characters in this event as I did in the 10K but they were out there to stop if you wanted to.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 016

We entered though the back side of the castle to run through it which is always a highlight for Disney fans. Where else can you do this at other than a Disney park event?

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 017

Entering the castle.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 018

Me crossing the bridge in front of the castle.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 019

I like Tomorrowland and never seem to get to explore it as much as I hope to.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 020

I haven’t had the opportunity to ride this here, but it looks great and is the original.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 021

We entered the backstage area once again and saw some of the parade vehicles and props for the upcoming Halloween decorations.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 022

After that we were out of the parks for the remainder of the event and out into the open roads that surround the area.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 023

The open roads meant it seem to be less crowded. There were numerous supporters and groups along the course that were there supporting the runners.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 024

I actually remembered this area from five years ago. The shade was nice, it started to warm up when the sun came out.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 025

This was a first for me. Some of you know that I drive race cars and like classic cars, and car shows, so seeing all these very nice California cars for miles along the course was awesome to me.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 026

We came up to the Honda Center where the Ducks play in the NHL.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 027

I “Lava’-ed these outfits. These two were highlighted not he Disney Blog / Twitter / Event photos.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 028

Here were all area coming up the to Angels Stadium.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 029

The Clif Bar arch. Its a great product if you haven’t tired it, please do.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 030

Entering the tunnel to come out to the field of Angel Stadium.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 031

There were tons of spectators and supporters here. It was awesome to see and awesome to be on the track on field level. Very crowded and slow but that was okay because we all wanted to take in these moments.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 032

Baseball field selfie wearing my new INKnBURN tank.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 033

If any Disney event people or exec’s see this… I’m sorry…. you have to admit this sign was funny. I love Disney events and do not mind paying to attend them because the experiences and memories will last a lifetime.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 035

Maybe a long lost cousin or something?

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 036

We know we all were getting close to the finish when we could see the park attractions again in the distance. These trees were nice shade to an increasingly warm morning.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 037

Crossing Disneyland Dr. to close in on the home stretch.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 038

Getting closer to the end of this great event. love my INKnBURN tank. I received many complements on it and many questions on where to find/buy/order it. Check them out for some great apparel.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 040

Can start to see the finish line!

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 039

A quick high-five to a random hand?

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 041

Nope, not to a random hand but that of our finish line greeter Mr. Doanld Duck himself.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 042

Volunteers and staff were all along the course in case they were needed. Here are a couple after crossing the finish line.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 043

This was exciting. Because I was able to accomplish both.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 044

A random person asked me to take their photo getting their medals put on them and in return they offered to do the same for me. I think this is the first time I have a picture like this. Thank you to all of the volunteers that were there.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 045

After race photo taken at a station in the finishers area.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 046

Thank you runDisney for another great event. Its been a few months since this was held at the time of this writing (I’m in grad school now and got way behind in my blog posts so I apologize to any readers for the lack of updates) and all the the memories of this great event weekend are still there… like it was yesterday. If you are on the fence about participating in a runDisney event for this reason or that, I hope this may have helped you decide that you will not regret participating in a Disney event. You will ask yourself why you did not do it sooner and will find yourself planning on attending more. See you all in April at Walt Disney World in FL for the Inaugural Star Wars runDisney event.

2015-09-03 – Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Party

Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Bag.jpg

Photo courtesy of Disney Parks Blog

The Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Party was held on September 3, 2015 which was a Thursday night and the kickoff of the runDisney event weekend. It was an after hours party in Disneyland… so it was pretty cool to say the least. We were also treated to the very nice shoulder bag shown above.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Party 001

With the Party Ticket option I had let you into the park in the evening which was perfect because this was the day of travel to CA. The park looks great in its 60th Anniversary decorations which will last a year. Check it out if you get the chance!

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Party 002

Had to get a quick pic in from of my favorite ride’s poster.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Party 003

A quick bite to eat in Tomorrowland and walked around the park some. It was five years to the weekend that I was here last.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Party 004

Had a great spot for the Anniversary fireworks show…. but it didn’t happen due to technical difficulties. Was a bit of  a bummer because this was my only chance to see the fireworks in the park this trip.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Party 005

After that the park official closed and the Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Party officially began. The entire park was not open, but a great deal of it was. It was very nice to see the park at night, see the parade without having to look over others, ride the rides we wanted to with no wait times and to just enjoy the park in a way that is not the norm. Favorite moment was on Splash Mountain… came back after the ride and the operator asked if we wanted to go again… “Heck yeah!”… so we got to ride it back to back in the same boat. Every cast member and person at the party were great and friendly.

2015 Disneyland Half Marathon 10th Anniversary Party 006

I even saw where Club 33 was…. I wanted to push the button… but didn’t. But I wanted to. If this party is offered again 5 years from now or 10 years from now or ever again… do it. You will not regret it.
