2013-01-13 – Aramco Houston Half Marathon

DSCN0087 2

The 2013 Aramco Houston Half Marathon was the first time I ran in this event. It starts and ends in the Downtown area of Houston. The Expo was held at the Convention Center hear the Start/Finish line. This was the first event that I had a family member, my father, attend.

DSCN0080 2

There were lots of vendors in the Expo. I took advantage and picked up some last minute items that I needed due to the predicted weather for the event.

DSCN0081 2

I even got the meet the world famous American runner Meb. He was signing copies of his book at the Expo the night before the run.

DSCN0099 2

It turned cold. and started to rain the morning of the run. The organizers let the participants stay in the Expo Hall till the last minute to stay warm and dry.

DSCN0102 2

While going to the starting line, it started to rain hard.

DSCN0107 2

It was a cold and wet start. This was the first event that I thought about stopping in the first couple of miles due to the weather.

DSCN0113 2

At this point near the start, I was soaked. And cold.

DSCN0119 2

Mile 3 and the rain lightened up.

DSCN0129 2

The roads were wet but there wasn’t much standing water.

DSCN0135 2

Ronald was out in the rain to cheer us all on.

DSCN0142 2

The underpass was the only spot that you didn’t get rained on.

DSCN0145 2

Lots of support along the course. It was much appreciated.

DSCN0156 2

The rain coats, ponchos and hats were out for the entire run I think.

DSCN0164 2

Always a great sight to see!

DSCN0167 2

Heading back towards the Downtown are.

DSCN0173 2

It was near this point in the run that the Half Marathon course and the Full Marathon course reconnect. The orange cones separate the courses from here to the finish.

DSCN0175 2

It was still cool, but not as wet. The sumo wrestlers were there to show their support.

DSCN0184 2

Almost to the end and so happy.

DSCN0186 2

The crowd was great!

DSCN0188 2

Finish line in sight.

725365-1106-0012s 2

Crossing the finish line in Houston.

725426-1010-0020s 2

So proud and so cold. But it was fun like always.

DSCN0192 2

It never ceases to amaze me how the supporters, friends and family of the runners come out in masses for these big events.

DSCN0193 2

I was back in the hotel and got to see this sight. Still lots of people supporting the runners that were finishing up.

2012-11-22 – Turkey Trot 5K

DSC04063

The 2012 Turkey Trot 5K in Beaumont, TX was held at the new Event Centre located near the Downtown area of Beaumont.

DSC04064

There seemed to be a large turnout for this annual event.

DSC04065

There was plenty of room to warm-up for the run and to wait for the event activates to begin. There were several families that make this an annual tradition.

DSC04066

The Downtown Beaumont buildings were in the background of the starting line.

DSC04071

This was probably the only elevation change for the course. You had to go under the underpass, make a loop, then come back on the other side.

DSC04079

Downtown Beaumont has many historical buildings and museums.

DSC04086

If you know me, you know I love history.

DSC04098

The finish line was right back near the starting line at the Event Centre. I was impressed with this new location and the facility itself.

2011-08-07 – Rock n Roll Providence Half Marathon

81837-1283-002f

The Inaugural Rock n Roll Providence Half Marathon took place in Providence, RI on August 7, 2011. This was a very nice trip. I have never been to this area and always have wanted to visit. I spent a couple of days in NYC, took a train to Providence, did a “Ghost Tour” in the city, rented a car and drove to Plymouth, MA. Even stopped and visited the famous Lizzy Borden house. I also wanted to experience an inaugural event. I was expecting some “headaches” or things not to run quite at 100% going into this event. The Expo and packet pickup went well. The only thing that did not go well was the weather on the morning of the event.

DSC03237

It rained from before the start until well into the afternoon. The whole 13.1 miles was run in the rain. The corral wave starts were eliminated and it was an all start. The first time I have been in an event like this and the first time I have been in an event where I was soaked the entire time.

DSC03248

It was a little cool with the rain, but not bad.

DSC03256

I loved seeing all the old and historic buildings around Brown University.

DSC03261

It was a mess to say the least, due to the weather and not the organizers.

DSC03266

I gave up trying to stay dry and accepted that I was going to be drenched the entire day.

DSC03278

There was some, but very little, standing water along the course.

DSC03288

Mile 6 and it was just as bad as Mile 1.

DSC03306

I took a seat on the park bench to look out at the river.

DSC03326

Running over the bridge was a piece of cake, even in the rain.

81837-298-036f

You cant help but to have fun in the rain. Mother Nature will always win in outdoor events.

DSC03337

The rain did get heavy every now and then, but no lightening.

DSC03342

The state Capital Building was in sight. This is where the childrens/family movie Underdog was filmed.

81837-379-026f

I was happy to finish. And happy to go back to the hotel. But even more happy that I was able to be at this inaugural event in a very nice city. The rain canceled some of the on course entertainment but that is expected when something like this happens. I have no complaints about this event, the organizers did the very best they could in a not so great situation due to the weather.

2010-11-11 – Rock n Roll San Antonio Half Marathon

DSC01612

The 2010 Rock n Roll San Antonio Half Marathon is a great event. Its one of my favorites in a great Texas city that I love to visit. I would run in this event every year if it was possible for me to do so. The expo is top notch as well. Many different vendors.

DSC01614

This year it started right outside the hotel I was at, in the downtown area near the world famous and historic Alamo.

DSC01613

Yes, I was trying to do a string of events wearing a hat of some sort that was related to the event and/or the city. Having a Mexican background I felt that this was a proper choice. I was called Pancho Villa more then once along the course.

DSC01623

The start was marred by a delay of a train for some of the runners. The early corrals made it past the railroad crossing before those of us further back had to wait for the train to clear. This was unusual and the first time I heard about this happening here.

DSC01640

You always have to take a photo by the Alamo if you are Texan and in San Antonio.

DSC01643

The historic (and reportedly haunted) Menger Hotel near the Alamo. Teddy Roosevelt recruited some of his Rough Riders at the bar in this hotel.

DSC01648

Mile 3 and the hat hasn’t come off.

DSC01649

I love the Downtown area of San Antonio Texas.

DSC01651

Yes, yes I did Rock the Half.

DSC01661

How often do you see this? Not very so you must take a photo.

DSC01687

The hat was getting loose by this point, but never fell off.

DSC01688

Close to the end of this great course.

DSC01695

People were cheering all along the course and the bands were great.

DSC01701

Lots of people gathered around the finish area.

DSC01707

Being in November the Rock n Roll Marathon Series people gave all the finishers a thermal if wanted or needed. It wasn’t needed on this day, but appreciated.

2010-09-05 – Disneyland Half Marathon

DSC00649

The 2010 Disneyland Half Marathon was second, and final part, of my Disney Coast-to-Coast Challenge. This was also my first trip to Disneyland. My first, and only to date, trip to the great state of California.

DSC00637

2010 was the 5th Anniversary of the Disneyland Half Marathon. The finishers medal had a special design for this event.

DSC00652

It was a little foggy at the start of the event, but that did not slow anyone down.

DSC00658

Parade elements were there to meet the runners near the California Adventure park.

DSC00674

Still a little foggy, but fun.

DSC00668

The mile markers were very nice.

DSC00669

Me, Lilo and Stich.

DSC00675

Me and the Bears.

DSC00687

Me and the characters from Princess and the Frog.

DSC00697

Belle, Aurora, Snow White and Cinderella weren’t impressed.

DSC00700

Me and some Stormtroopers.

60740-2029-027f

The castle was smaller then the one at WDW, but just as nice.

DSC00705

As with the WDW Half Marathon, there were lots and lots of character photo ops.

DSC00710

After making our way though California Adventure and Disneyland, we were on the streets of Anaheim heading towards the baseball stadium and the hockey arena.

DSC00746

Touching the grass on the field of where the Angels play.

DSC00766

Getting close to the finish.

DSC00777

Lots of people watching the runners come towards the finish line which was near the Disneyland Hotel.

DSC00780

This was a great event. Side note, an episode of the first season of the Extreme Weightloss TV show was being filmed during this event.

DSC00785

I earned my Disneyland Half finishers medal and my Disney Coast-to-Coast medal.

DSC00788

It took a great deal for me to get to this point. To earn these medals and accomplish my personal goals and achieve some personal bests. I came a long way in the year from my first half marathon to this point in time. I was and am very proud because I wasn’t sure if I could do it or would make it. But I did.

IMG_1308

I worked very hard (and spent a great deal or time and money traveling & training) to earn these. Out of all my accomplishments in NHRA Drag Racing and now running for fun & fitness, these were the most important to me personally.

2010-01-09 – Walt Disney World Half Marathon

DSC08741The 2010 Walt Disney World Half Marathon was the biggest (and best) running event I have participated in at the time. It was my 3rd half marathon event. This was my first trip to Florida and my first every trip to Walt Disney World. I was running for the LIVESTRONG Foundation charity in honor of Margaret Ash of the USA and Geoff Simpson of Australia. This event was very memorable. It was the first part of my Disney Coast-to-Coast Challenge. It was unusually cold for Florida weather. There was frost, ice and even snow flurries which just made everything wet and cold. Something I wasn’t used to and haven’t run in before.

DSC08714

There are so many character photo opportunities available at this running event, before and during the run.

DSC08740

The start was a welcomed sight after waiting in the cold corals with snow flurries falling.

 DSC08750

You get to run though the gates of the Magic Kingdom!

DSC08761

Up to this run, I had never seen so many runners in one place.

DSC08769

The Christmas decorations were still up during the event, which was a pleasant surprise and great to see.

DSC08772

Buzz Lightyear and myself.

DSC08774

The Mad Hatter, Alice, me and the Queen of Hearts.

DSC08776

Captain Hook, me and Smithers.

DSC08780

You get to run though the castle! It was a tight fit with all the runners, use caution.

DSC08782

Prince Charming, me and the Fairy Godmother. With so many character photo ops, you have to take advantage of the ones you normally wouldn’t get to see often during a normal park day.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Photo op in front of Cinderella’s Castle.

DSC08793

Me and the Country Bears.

DSC08794

Very wet, still cold. Not as slippery as you may think, but still ran with caution.

DSC08795

The WDW Railroad Train Conductors.

DSC08797 2

Pirates!

DSC08800

Me, Mary Poppins, Bert and a penguin.

DSC08808

Once out of the park there was a long stretch of the course that was out on the roads that surround the WDW parks.

IMG_0895

Still very cold.

DSC08814

A couple of overpasses were the only “hills” on this course.

DSC08828

The event ends at the Epcot park.

DSC08832

How often do you see the “Meet the Robinsons” characters?

57860-2190-022f

Finally across the finish line, in a slow pace mainly due to the weather and all the stops I made for photos. I was the coldest I ever been after this run and it took a bit to warm up, but I have no regrets and will do it again. The Disney Running, now runDisney, events are top notch and hard to beat. The Expo was huge and the packet pickup went smoothly. Everything was well run and organized.

DSC08843

2009-11-26 – Turkey Trot 5K

  DSC07763

The 2009 Turkey Trot 5K in Beaumont, Texas was held at Tyrrell Park. This annual event had always has a decent turnout for runners and walkers in the Beaumont area.

DSC07756

This was my first Turkey Trot to run in.

DSC07759

The course followed along the long driveway of the park, then looped back to the area of the park that we started in. The weather was nice and cool, but not cold. Perfect for running in Southeast Texas.

DSC07760

This was a chip timed event. After crossing the finish line we had to return the chip that we were given in our race packet. This even is well run each and every year. It impressed me on this, my first time at this event, and encouraged me to come back and check out other events put on by the Sea Rim Striders Running Group.

THE POWER OF THE GROUP
by Olympian Jeff Galloway
www.RunInjuryFree.com

The fun of running with a group pulled me into the sport 57 years ago.  Running and training with my friends Steve Prefontaine, Frank Shorter Bill Rodgers, brought out the best of running in me—while we became good friends, and Olympians.  As I travel the US this season, for our Galloway training program kickoffs, I see the same fun, support and friendship development.  I hope to see many of you at our free clinics.  Here are the ways I’ve observed runners of all abilities improve more and have more fun when in the right group.

1. Great friendships
2. The miles go by quicker—telling stories, sharing life experiences
3. Guidance in running with the right group for you, with the appropriate run walk run strategy
4. Because the group is waiting for you, you will stay motivated and get out there more often
5. You’ll learn about some interesting races, places to run, fun running experiences
6. On the really tough workouts and races, the group will pull you through
7. Access to tools for management of nutrition, fluids, motivation, aches/pains
8. The right group leadership can fine-tune the pace of each workout, avoiding injury/exhaustion
9. Helping others who are struggling bestows an amazing sense of achievement
10. Sharing the empowerment of finishing a long run can change your life

Most groups, like our Galloway programs allow runners to try them out for free.  Together we can celebrate fitness and inspire others to improve the quality of their lives.

FIVE WAYS TO GET FASTER
by Olympian Jeff Galloway
www.RunInjuryFree.com

Longer Long Runs

Increasing the length of the longest long run has produced the greatest amount of improvement that I’ve seen among my coaching clients.  Several surveys have shown more than 13 minutes of time improvement when runners increase their longest long run from 20 miles to 26 miles before a marathon.  Comparable time improvements are experienced in 10K runners and half marathoners when they increase their long runs above race distance as noted in my YEAR ROUND PLAN book that covers all the distances.  Long runs must be at least 2 min/mi slower than current ability, with liberal walk breaks.  The slower the pace, the quicker the recovery.  I suggest doing the long runs every 2-3 weeks.

Speed Repetitions—increasing the number

My runners have improved by an average of over 6 minutes in a marathon (3+ minutes in a half marathon) by increasing the number of speed repetitions to 14 x 1 mile for the marathon, and 14 x 800 meter for the half marathon.  I recommend that each of these be run 30 sec/mi faster than goal pace.  The recovery interval is a 5 min walk between miles and a 3 minute walk between 800’s.  These workouts prepare one to maintain or pick up pace at the end of the goal race, instead of slowing down.  See GALLOWAY TRAINING PROGRAMS & HALF MARATHON books for details (http://www.RunInjuryFree.com).

Improve Running Form

Most runners I’ve monitored have improved several minutes in a marathon by fine-tuning their running form.  As the mechanics become smoother and within one’s limits, there is a significant reduction in aches, pains and injuries.  The two best ways to improve form are water running and cadence drills.
•        Water running uses the same basic motion as when running on land, using a flotation device so that the feet don’t touch the bottom of the pool.  When done for at least 15 minutes, once a week, the legs find a more efficient path through the water—eliminating extraneous motion.
•        The cadence drill is done for 30 seconds, counting the number of times the foot touches the ground.  This drill is detailed in most of my books.  I’ve found the key to improving speed on the mechanical side is quicker turnover.

Race in Shorter Events

Dropping down a standard distance or two can improve your mechanics for running faster and your ability to handle a higher level of oxygen debt.  On non-long-run weekends, during a half marathon program, try some 5K or 10K races.  When training for a marathon, race at the 10K or half marathon distance.  At first, the faster pace of the shorter distance may seem awkward.  But after several short races, you will adapt—especially if you do some speed training for the shorter/faster event.  These performance improvements can translate into faster times in the longer distances.  My book 5K/10K details the training and the racing strategies for these events.

Hill Training

The only way I’ve found to build strength for running is to run hill repeats.  On a moderate grade hill, start at a jog and pick up the turnover rate of the feet and legs as you go up the hill, shortening your stride.  Walk down the hill for recovery.  Don’t sprint, and follow the other hill training guidelines in my books and at http://www.RunInjuryFree.com.  The strength from hill training will allow you to perform better in speed sessions which will help you improve in your goal race.  You’ll also run faster on hilly courses, during your races.
